Problem: Today cancer is treated like one disease with one target, when in fact each patient’s tumor is unique and has multiple disease pathways. As a result standardized one-at-a-time treatment regimens and single experimental drug clinical trials eventually fail many patients. AIDS demonstrated the power of combination drug therapy which changed the disease from a death sentence into a manageable disease. Combination drug therapy has worked in cancer as well, but cannot incorporate experimental drugs as they must pass through safety clinical trials before they can be combined with other treatments. Any FDA approved drug can be legally prescribed off-label by any doctor to treat any disease. Multiple prescriptions can be used as components of a combinations. Many approved drugs like antidepressants have already shown anti-cancer effects, but there's no financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to sponsor these off-patent drugs.
